A recent shift in cultural studies focuses on the basic mobility of cultures and centers new research on questions of travel, mobility, and new time-space connections in our epoch of intensified globalization. What then could be more appealing than to look at travel narratives in general and road movies in particular to explore contemporary movements in time and space? It is Bakhtin who reminds us that road narratives are prototypical for an artistic rendering of the inseparability of time and space. Their chronotopical nature locates them at the very center of narratives of the global and road movies have witnessed an expansion throughout “America”. Tracing the origin and expansion of a classical film genre we will analyze the road as concept, the journey as quest for “self” and “America” in recent film productions. Active participation, short paper and oral presentation are class requirements.
