The increasing globalization of production and the emergence of transnational and global production chains has led to flexible, informal, temporary, and insecure forms of predominantly female employment. Especially women in the Global South are often found at the lower end of the hierarchy of the global division of labour. At the same time, more and more women have been on the move, and it is estimated that women make up about half of all international migrants worldwide. The feminization of migration is at the same time a feminization of labor, particularly in the service sector and healthcare, also as a result of the global care crisis. In this seminar, students learn about the significance of gender for cross-border labour migration. Concepts such as global care chains or modern slavery and phenomena such as gendered labour market recruitment are discussed.
The Seminar is organized in two two-day sessions plus a mandatory preparatory meeting.
