Why is it so hard to change the world? Social sciences in the public sphere
For the past years the migration of refugees and labour migrants has been on top of the political agenda -- once again. This seminar deals with the following questions: How do social scientists and other experts intervene in the public debates to analyse the context, the causes and the aftermath of refugee movements and other cross-border mobilities and transnational migrations? How do migration researchers intervene in public-policy making by offering measures to address the “root causes” of refugee flows, resettlement, return and integration of refugees and migrants? To what extent does their knowledge influence thinking about the issues involved? In turn, how is the production of research shaped by political processes?
-- The working language of this course is English. Yet papers are welcome in English, German, and French.
