Departing from theoretical texts from the field of urban, spatial studies as well as ethnic studies we will explore the representation of Los Angeles in recent and contemporary cinema, e.g. films such as Crash, Chinatown, and Falling Down among others. We will emphasize a "visual and theme-based close reading" of film scenes and explore how to use theoretical concepts from urban, spatial, and ethnic studies for film analysis in a cultural studies context.
