The term ‘human nature’ appears in both scholarly articles but also in the media and everyday life. But what exactly is human nature? Is it a set of biological traits? Is it a context for behaviour? Is it a lie? Why is it important? In this course we will examine the debate about human nature, from an evolutionary perspective. We will analyse and critique an array of approaches to human nature in the light of evolutionary theory, including species essentialism, sociobiology and evolutionary psychology, cultural evolution and others.
