220065 The Americas in the Cold War: Conflict and Cooperation (S) (WiSe 2018/2019)

This seminar introduces the history of the Cold War in the Americas and highlights some events and conjunctures of inter-American interaction and entanglement. It focuses specifically on the asymmetrical relationship between the United States on the one hand and countries in Latin America and the Caribbean on the other. Embedded in the larger picture of U.S.-Latin American interactions since the beginning of the American Century in 1898, the aim is to provide a framework that helps to understand the dynamics of U.S. hegemony and resistance, cooptation and cooperation in Latin America in several settings. The ultimate goal is to gain a basis for the analysis of the scope and limits of development cooperation in Latin America in the 20th century, a topic that will be treated in the seminar no. 220105 "Comparative Analyses on Development Politics in the Americas".
