Im 19. Jahrhundert ist die französische Malerei von zahlreichen, teils einander widersprechenden Entwicklungen geprägt. Neben dezidiert progressiven Bewegungen lassen sich konservativ-beharrende Tendenzen ausmachen, und explizit politisch engagierte Malerei konkurriert mit Positionen, die auf eine Zuspitzung der ästhetischen Autonomie der Kunst zielen (l'art pour l'art). Die Vorlesung soll einen Überblick über die französische Malerei des 19. Jahrhunderts zur Grundlage nehmen, um nach dem komplexen und spannungsreichen Verhältnis von Politisierung und ästhetischer Autonomisierung zu fragen. Dabei könnte sich zeigen, dass 'Modernität' und Politisierung keineswegs immer miteinander einhergehen.
