250205 Decolonizing Universities and Schools: Race, Knowledge, and Ethics (S) (WiSe 2018/2019)

Contents, comment

This seminar draws from the sociology of elite schools and several branches of critical theory to: (1) analyze the colonial logics that underpin the sorting of people through educational institutions; and (2) explore decolonial possibilities for new educational futures. We will study sociological, decolonial, critical race, and feminist theory by authors including Du Bois, Fanon, Wynter, Razack, and Ahmed to excavate the interlocking nature of institutional power and explore possibilities for organizing to decolonize education. Together with this theoretical focus, we will learn about current university decolonization movements, including Decolonize Cambridge and Rhodes Must Fall, to think about decolonizing educational institutions in the German context. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a PhotoVoice exhibit for the university community at the end of the course. You can learn about this year’s exhibit here: https://www.facebook.com/events/1528101553961144/ .
