Militär und Gesellschaft sind keine voneinander getrennten Bereiche, sondern eng miteinander verflochten. Mobilmachung und Militarisierung betreffen immer die gesamte Gesellschaft, so wie auch Krieg und Kriegsfolgenbewältigung erhebliche gesellschaftliche Auswirkungen haben. Umgekehrt wirken aber auch gesellschaftliche Entwicklungen darauf ein, wie Kriege begründet und geführt werden. Gegenstand des Moduls ist das Verhältnis von Militär und Gesellschaft im Wandel der Epochen vom Mittelalter bis in die Frühe Neuzeit. Spezifika der einzelnen Teilepochen werden ebenso herausgearbeitet wie lange Kontinuitätslinien. Im Zentrum der Übung stehen wissenschaftliche Textarbeit an Forschungsliteratur und Quelleninterpretation.
