Die Entstehung und Entwicklung von Städten im mittelalterlichen und frühneuzeitlichen Europa ist zu problematisieren: Fragen nach Kontinuität und Neubeginn, dem Werden eigenständiger Gemeinschaften, städtischer Neuanlage und planmäßigem Ausbau, städtischen Zusammenschlüssenim Spätmittelalter und Wandlungen nach der Reformationszeit sind zu erläutern. Vertiefend sollen dazu Stadtwelten erörtert werden hinsichtlich der Ordnung des städtischen Lebens, der Kirche, der Wirtschaft und des Lebensraums. Kontroversen um die Definitionen des Stadtbegriffs, zur Entwicklung der vormodernen Stadt und ihrer Freiheiten, zur Bedeutung innerstädtischer Konflikte und der Zünfte sind im Blick auf neue veränderte Forschungsinteressen aufzugreifen. Dieses Seminar thematisiert die Stadt als historisches Phänomen: Von der Mitte des 12. Jahrhunderts bis weit ins 16. Jahrhundert hinein werden Grundlagen, Verläufe, Ergebnisse und Erfolge des vielschichtigen Formierungsvorganges Platz in der Betrachtung einnehmen.
