„Religion“ stellt eines der traditionell bedeutendsten Untersuchungsobjekte der Soziologie dar. In diesem Seminar wird in Fragestellungen, Forschungskontexte, Kontroversen und soziologische Befunde der Religionssoziologie eingeführt, angefangen bei der Religionskritik der Aufklärung über die klassische Religionssoziologie bis hin zu zeitgenössischen Ansätzen. Die aktuelle Forschungslage über Religion in der Gesellschaft wird mit Hilfe der meist sehr umstrittenen Konzepte der Säkularisierung, Individualisierung, Pluralisierung und Privatisierung von Religion erarbeitet. Abschließend kommen aktuelle Probleme im Verhältnis von Religion und Politik, Religion und Gewalt sowie Religion und Zivilgesellschaft zur Sprache.
