300055 Refugees in Africa (S) (SoSe 2018)

Contents, comment

Boats which cross the Mediterranean Sea from Africa to Europe have become emblematic of the European ‘refugee crisis’. Yet most African refugees do not try to reach Europe; instead, they use to live in neighbour states of their countries of origin. In this seminar, we will explore these people’s lived realities and the socio-political environment in which they are embedded. The seminar will start with a general overview on refugees in Africa and then zoom in on East Africa, where many important countries of origin as well as host countries are located. By means of examples from this region, mainly from Uganda, we will discuss issues such as refugees’ victimhood and agency, African countries’ refugee policies, relations between refugees and host societies, and media discourses about refugees.
