John Lockes „Zweite Abhandlung über die Regierung“ (1690) ist ein Klassiker der politischen Philosophie und hatte erheblichen Einfluss auf die amerikanische Verfassung. Locke entwickelt in seiner Abhandlung unter anderem eine Vertragstheorie staatlicher Autorität und eine naturrechtliche Begründung des Privateigentums.
