In den kriegführenden Ländern der Weltkriege lässt sich eine kriegsbedingte gesellschaftliche Transformation feststellen, die man mit den Begriffen „funktionale Entdifferenzierung“ und „zentrale Steuerung“ umschreiben kann. Aber welche strukturellen Dynamiken entfalten die Kriege, wenn man aus globaler (nicht: einzelstaatlicher) Perspektive beobachtet? Historisch sollen vor allem die Regionen behandelt werden, die nicht oder weniger von den Weltkriegen betroffen waren, also neutrale Staaten, (außereuropäische) Kolonien, Lateinamerika. Als theoretische Interpretationsinstrumente sollen insbesondere die Luhmannsche Weltgesellschaftstheorie und Wallersteins Theorie des kapitalistischen Weltsystems dienen.
