230622 Anglophone Literatures - Life Writings (S) (SoSe 2026)

This seminar introduces students to the diverse and complex genre of Anglophone life writing. Focusing on contemporary texts, we will explore how life narratives engage with experiences of displacement, cultural hybridity, and migration, while also examining the articulation of female voices and the search for belonging in an increasingly diverse and globalized world.
Primary texts include,e.g, Jhumpa Lahiri’s In Other Words and Thi Bui’s The Best We Could Do, a graphic memoir, and Jamaica Kincaid's The Autobiography of My Mother. Using these works as a starting point, the seminar investigates what it means to write from and within complex cultural environments and how language shapes the narration of (transcultural) lives.
