Die Vorlesung beschäftigt sich mit der soziologischen Analyse politischer Phänomene. Gegenüber klassischen Ansätzen der politischen Soziologie, die sich vor allem mit dem Zusammenhang von Sozialstruktur und Politik beschäftigen, wird ein allgemeinerer Zugang vorgeschlagen: Politik wird demnach verstanden als gesellschaftlicher Teilbereich, und die Aufgabe der politischen Soziologie besteht darin, das Verhältnis von Politik und Gesellschaft systematisch und historisch zu analysieren. Politische Phänomene – wie z.B. Macht und Herrschaft, Staat und Verwaltung, Wahlen und Verfassung – werden zu diesem Zweck in der Vorlesung mithilfe soziologischer Begriffe rekonstruiert und in den Zusammenhang gesellschaftlicher Entwicklungen gestellt.
