Im Seminar wird erarbeitet, wie sich im Zeitverlauf die gesellschaftstheoretische Konzeption des Staates verändert hat. Es geht dabei nicht um Staatstheorien als solche im staatsphilosophischen oder politikwissenschaftlichen Sinn, sondern wie der Staat in soziologischen Gesellschaftstheorien verortet wurde. Die Veranstaltung beginnt mit "klassischen" Grundlagen (Marx, Gumplowicz oder Oppenheimer, Weber) und behandelt dann neuere Entwicklungen u. a. bei Elias, Wallerstein, Luhmann, Bourdieu und der historischen Soziologie (Giddens, Charles Tilly, Skocpol).
