250365 Same person - different body: Time Lords in Doctor Who and Trills in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (S) (WiSe 2015/2016)

In our present, it is possible to modify your body with medical interventions. However, this possibility has effected the perception of bodies and unfortunately led some people become scared of persons that have modified their body.
The science fictions Stark Trek: Deep Space Nine and Doctor Who have addressed this topic in different points in time and offer a space for mind games concerning persons that have changed their body. How does the social environment in these series treat characters that have changed their body recently?
We will analyze Time Lords' (2005-2015) and Trills' (1993-1999) interaction with other characters by means of qualitative empirical social sciences: This course will introduce you to the methods of Grounded Theory coding and Situational Analysis which are powerful tools for explorative data analysis. After an introduction to these two methods, we will spend time on coding scenes from both series by using the software ATLAS.ti. Eventually, this analysis will provide us with concepts that help us to engage with people in our real world who are scared of persons that have modified their body.
