Kommentar:
Seit den 1990er Jahren (vor allem auf dem 142. Historikertag 1998) findet innerhalb der Geschichtswissenschaft eine intensive Auseinandersetzung über das Wirken einzelner Historiker im NS-Regime statt. Hierbei ist zu berücksichtigen, dass nach 1945 die Entnazifizierung „24 von 110 der westdeutschen Historiker“ betraf, wobei Hermann Lübbe im Jahre 1983 treffend ein „insgesamt eher einverständliches Schweigen“ feststellte, „wenn es um die geistige Nähe oder gar persönliche Mittäterschaft der Historiker im Dritten Reich ging“. Vor diesem Hintergrund sollen in der Veranstaltung nicht nur wichtige lebens- und werkgeschichtliche Stränge behandelt, sondern auch Handlungsspielräume der Protagonisten untersucht werden. Insgesamt geht es aber nicht nur um die Wirkungsgeschichte deutscher Historiker im NS-System, sondern auch um ihre Einordnung im Kontext der Weimarer Republik und der jungen Bundesrepublik Deutschland.
