Going beyond a philosophical and moral ideal, social cohesion is a highly political and applied concept that various actors intervene in its formulation. The lecture provides an overview of the historical and theoretical foundation of the concept while tracing its evolution across disciplines such as sociology, psychology, and political science. Students will explore how the operationalisation of social cohesion intersects with timely issues, such as diversity, migration, and minority groups. Through the lecture, students will gain an understanding of the core aspects and measurements of social cohesion and an ability to compare and critique different schools of thought.
The intended learning objectives:
Analysing the theoretical underpinnings of social cohesion.
Engaging critically with debates and critiques surrounding social cohesion.
Comparing different conceptualisation and operationalisation of social cohesion

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
Students are expected to read the core materials provided by the instructor and actively participate in class discussions. At the end of the seminar, students will complete a written assignment, either individually or as part of a study group.
Individual assignments should take the form of a literature review, while group projects should focus on a case study and include some sort of either qualitative or quantitative data analysis.
Active participation throughout the course will count towards the final grade (10%)
