One of the most prominent features Paul Auster's novels have in common is their setting: nine out of sixteen are set in New York City, where Auster also lives. Auster's New York, however, has little to do with the glittering, sexy metropolis of popular imagination; it is a world of concrete, hardships and surreal encounters and thus more than a mere backdrop against which narratives unfold.
In this class we will roam these fictional streets of NYC together and ponder functions and effects of cityscapes as literary settings.
