Different forms of urban riot filled the news of the last decades in the USA, in England and in France. Sociological research in the domains of urban, migration and youth sociology proposes different explanations for the social causes of this emergency. At stake is the question if the development is a brand new phenomenon or an endemic aspect of modern urbanism. The seminary introduces on the one hand to some classical contributions to urban sociology (e.g. within the so-called Chicago School by: E. Burgess, R. McKenzie, R. E. Park and L. Wirth). On the other hand, it focusses on the actual debate about the topics of urbanisation, migration, residential segregation, ethnic relations, youth and urban violence; amongst others in the work of J. Dangshat, E. Hartmann, W. Heitmeyer, M. Moran, J. Rex, L. Wacquant, M. Wieviorka.
