In this seminar, students are introduced to the Indian Education system, which caters to one of the most populous and multicultural nations. Students examine the evolution of its educational system, from the ancient Gurukul system and colonialera mass schooling to the modern pursuit of universal education. Further, we explore the social, cultural, and political structures along with philosophical theories that have influenced the Indian Education system, setting a foundation to investigate Inclusion within this context.
A key focus of this seminar is understanding inclusive practices within the Indian context. Hence, students learn about the educational experiences of oft-marginalized groups such as the Dalit community, women, migrant workers, disability community, economically disadvantaged and so on. By comparing India’s inclusive policies and practices to global educational trends or their own national contexts, students will gain a broader understanding of inclusive education on a global scale.
