Luther und die Reformation gehören zu den zentralen kirchenhistorischen Themen im Religionsunterricht aller Schularten, so dass eine fundierte kirchenhistorische und geschichtsdidaktische Beschäftigung mit dem Thema grundsätzlich gegeben ist. Darüber hinaus soll in den Seminar der Blick auf neuere Ansätze der Vermittlung gerichtet werden sowie auf eine Untersuchung der heutigen Bedeutung der lutherischen Reformation.
