Samuel Becketts Stück „Fin de partie“, das 1957 uraufgeführt und kurz darauf vom Autor selbst übersetzt wird („Engdame“, 1958), steht im Zentrum des Seminars. Bevor Elmar Tophoven eine deutsche Übersetzung („Endspiel“, 1974) vorlegt, erscheint bereits 1961 im zweiten Band der „Noten zur Literatur“ Theodor W. Adornos Aufsatz „Versuch, das Endspiel zu verstehen“, an dessen Titel sich der Seminartitel anlehnt. In einem ersten Schritt werden wir das Drama in der dreisprachigen Suhrkamp-Ausgabe aufmerksam lesen und dabei insbesondere Fragen der Figurenzeichnung sowie der Übersetzung diskutieren. Im Anschluss daran liegt, in einem zweiten Schritt, der Fokus auf Adornos Aufsatz. In einem dritten und letzten Schritt rückt die Aufführungs- und weitere Rezeptionsgeschichte in den Blick. Dabei bilden insbesondere medien- und literaturtheoretische Aspekte der Inszenierung und Interpretation Schwerpunkte in der Seminardiskussion.
