Die Veranstaltung bietet einen Überblick über die klassischen Ansätze in der Wirtschaftswissenschaft beginnend mit Adam Smith (1776) bis zu Milton Friedman (1970). Nach einer methodischen Einführung über den Sinn und Nutzen einer Geschichte der Wirtschaftswissenschaft, werden jeweils die Grundlagen der ökonomischen Klassik, Neoklassik, Historischen Schule der Nationalökonomie, Allgemeine Gleichgewichtstheorie, Keynesianismus und Makroökonomie sowie des Monetarismus allgemeinverständlich vorgestellt. Anschließend erfolgt eine Diskussion von Ausschnitten zentraler Theorietexte einschlägiger Autoren. Die Veranstaltung konzentriert sich überwiegend auf den „ökonomischen Mainstream“. Sie ist an Historiker, Philosophen und Sozialwissenschaftler orientiert, die die Ideengeschichte der Ökonomie als Hintergrundwissen für ihre Spezialdisziplinen verwenden und versteht sich nicht als Einführung in die Volkswirtschaftslehre.
