Willard van Orman Quine (1908-2000) gehört zu den bedeutensten amerikanischen Philosophen des 20. Jahrhunderts; die Schwerpunkte seiner Arbeit waren Logik, Erkenntnistheorie, Wissenschaftstheorie und Sprachphilosphie.
Das Seminar behandelt zum einen ausgewählte Arbeiten Quines: seine Kritik an der Unterscheidung zwischen analytischen und synthetischen Propositionen (Two Dogmas of Empiricism, 1951); Quines Sprachphilosophie, bes. die These der Unbestimmtheit von Übersetzungen und die der Unerforschbarkeit der Bezugnahme (Word and Object, 1960); seine holistische Bestätigungstheorie (Duhem-Qunie-These) sowie seinen naturalistischen Ansatz in der Erkenntnistheorie. Zum anderen sollen Rezeption und Kritiken von Quines Position behandelt werden.

Diese Veranstaltung muss als Äquivalent für den Lektürekurs besucht werden.
Voraussetzung für die Vergabe von 2 Leistungspunkten (Bachelor Einschreibung bis SoSe 11 und Master of Education) ist die regelmäßige Teilnahme sowie das Erbringen des schriftlichen oder mündlichen Beitrags im Umfang von maximal 1200 Wörtern für das Modulportfolio, auf dem die unbenotete Moduleinzelleistung beruht. Die Anforderungen für den Modulportfolio-Beitrag werden zu Veranstaltungsbeginn bekannt gegeben.
Voraussetzung für die Vergabe von 3 Leistungspunkten (Einschreibung ab WS 11/12) ist das Erbringen des schriftlichen oder mündlichen Beitrags im Umfang von maximal 1200 Wörtern bzw. 10-20 Minuten. Die genauen Anforderungen werden zu Veranstaltungsbeginn bekannt gegeben.
