Parallel zur Ausdifferenzierung einer autonomen Literatur etablieren sich die modernen Massenmedien. Auf der Grundlage der Systemtheorie Niklas Luhmanns soll der Prozess einer Verselbstständigung der beiden Bereiche im Hinblick auf Voraussetzungen und Folgen beschrieben werden, um dann anhand ausgewählter Texte zu untersuchen, wie Literatur und Massenmedien sich aufeinander beziehen. Dabei werden einerseits das Verhältnis von Literatur und Journalismus speziell im Vormärz und in der Neuen Sachlichkeit im Zentrum stehen, andererseits literarische Texte, welche die Tätigkeit von Journalisten thematisieren und reflektieren.
