This course will look at the 'genre' of documentary film on popular music. The overall objective is to work toward 'a poetics' of music documentaries and explore their crucial role in expressing, narrating and historicizing 'optional cultures', 'nation' and 'identity'. Looking at the crossroads of documentary film and music, we analyze how these media contribute to the narration of music history and related cultural identities. In particular we will address aspects of visual and verbal narrative, the intersection of sound and image, music and history as well as music and politics. Individual and group work will be part of our seminar structure. Our primary texts will range from film classics like Woodstock to recent documentaries such as Searching for Sugarman.
