Thick concepts sind Ausdrücke wie z.B. ‚Feigling‘, ‚Freund‘, ‚generös‘, oder ‚grausame‘ die in ihrer sprachlichen Bedeutung eine Beschreibung mit einer Bewertung verbinden, wie es scheint. So verstanden unterscheiden sich thick concepts sowohl von rein bewertenden Begriffen wie ‚gut‘ oder ‚richtig‘ als auch von rein beschreibenden Begriffen wie ‚verwandt‘ oder ‚Dirigent‘. Zudem unterscheiden sie sich von Begriffen wie ‚Kommunist‘, bei denen die transportierten Bewertungen von den jeweiligen Sprecher*innen abhängen und eben nicht Teil der sprachlichen Bedeutung sind.
Thick concepts sind ein spannender Forschungsgegenstand sowohl für die Sprachphilosophie wie auch für die Metaethik. Wir wollen im Seminar zentrale Texte zu thick concepts lesen und diskutieren, wobei zunächst einmal sprachphilosophische Fragen – Wie funktionieren thick concepts? Wie transportieren sie sowohl beschreibende als auch bewertenden Elemente? – im Vordergrund stehen werden.
