Das Seminar diskutiert verschiedene Ansätze der letzten zwanzig bis dreißig Jahre, in denen versucht wurde, eine nationalgeschichtliche Rahmung historischer Untersuchung zu überwinden und transnationale oder globale Prozesse in der Geschichte in den Blick zu nehmen. Dazu werden sowohl konzeptionelle Texte herangezogen als auch konkrete Anwendungsbeispiele besprochen. Wichtige Fragen sind dabei, welches Verständnis von historischen Räumen entwickelt und wie Beziehungen zwischen Gesellschaften neu gedacht worden sind. Kann eine transnationale Geschichtsschreibung indes der Bedeutung von Grenzen und der Wirkmächtigkeit von Nation im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert gerecht werden? Inwieweit sind Transfer- und Vergleichsstudien kombinierbar? Wie geht die Globalgeschichte mit regionalen Besonderheiten um, und wie können globalgeschichtliche Studien praktikabel werden?
