220098 History of social group categorizations in the Americas (K) (WiSe 2013/2014)

Contents, comment

This course will provide an historical overview on categories of social group differentiations and hierarchizations in the Americas from colonial times to the 20th century. Beginning with the Hispanic model of the 'dos repúblicas' as the guiding principle of jurisdiction and the society of castes, we will turn to the transfer and transformation of the concept of nobility; analyze race relations with respect to the people of African descent in the different American slave societies, before engaging with class stratification, gender relations and current processes of ethnicization and de-ethnicization.
