Nicht nur für die deutsche Gesellschaft, sondern auch für die Wirtschaft stellte der Erste Weltkrieg einen tiefen Bruch dar. Zwar war die deutsche Wirtschaft auch vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg keineswegs "frei" oder "liberal" organisiert, sondern durch zahlreiche Kartelle und Monopole geprägt. Die Kriegswirtschaft bedeutete aber eine vollkommen neue Qualität der staatlichen und korporatistischen Steuerung der Wirtschaft und nicht zuletzt der Verteilung des Wohlstandes. Diese spezifische Form der kriegsbedingten Lenkungswirtschaft wurde auch nach dem Kriegsende nicht vollständig zurückgenommen. Ganz im Gegenteil, zeichnete sich die Wirtschaft der Zwischenkriegszeit und mehr noch die NS-Wirtschaft durch eine starke staatliche Steuerung aus.
Die vergleichsweise umfassende staatliche Wirtschaftslenkung bildet den inhaltichen Angelpunkt für die Überblicksveranstaltung zur Geschichte der deutschen Wirtschaft in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Daneben wird die Veränderung der Wirtschaftsstruktur, der Beschäftigung, der außenwirtschaftlichen Verflechtung sowie die Wohlstandsentwicklung des Landes in den Blick genommen. Die Veranstaltung führt in zentrale Themen der deutschen Wirtschaftsgeschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts ein: Die Geschichte der Hyperinflation 1923, der Weltwirtschaftskrise 1929/31, der nationalsozialistischen Aufrüstung und der "Großraumwirtschaft" sowie den ökonomischen Zusammenbruch.
