Mit der „politischen und industriellen Doppelrevolution“ (Eric J. Hobsbawm) entstanden in Westeuropa die drei großen politischen Strömungen der Moderne: Liberalismus, Konservatismus und Sozialismus. Die Veranstaltung setzt sich mit dem politischen Denken des Konservatismus im Westeuropa des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts auseinander. Dabei wird der Akzent auf die Entwicklung konservativer Leitgedanken, auf die soziale Basis und Trägerschichten des Konservatismus in vergleichender Perspektive mit Blick auf drei Phasen gesetzt: 1. Klassischer Konservatismus des 19. Jahrhunderts; 2. Konservatismus der Umbruchzeit (Ende 19./ Anfang 20. Jahrhunderts); 3. Neokonservatismus nach 1945.
