Die Vorlesung führt in eine zentrale Epoche der amerikanischen Geschichte ein. Es beginnt mit den Ursachen der Großen Depression und ihren Folgen für die amerikanische Gesellschaft, der Wahl Franklin D. Rossevelts zum Präsidenten und der Krisenbekämpfung durch öffentliche Arbeitsbeschaffungsprogramme und eine antizyklische Konjunkturpolitik (New Deal). Über die Gesellschaft der USA während des Zweiten Weltkriegs und die epochale Wende der amerikanischen Außenpolitik (vom Isolationismus zum Interventionismus) geht es weiter zur Vorbildwirkung des "American Way of Life" und seinen weniger bekannten Schattenseiten und Widersprüchen. Die Geschichte der 1960er Jahre behandelt die Bürgerrechtsbewegung, das Konzept einer sozial integrierten "Great Society", die fehlgeleitete amerikanische Militärintervention in Vietnam und die den allmählichen Verlust der unagefochtenen wirtschaftlichen Vormachtsstellung in der westlichen Welt.
