Mode verstanden als permanenter Wechsel ist bereits sprachlich im Wort MODErne enthalten. In seinem Passagen-Werk notiert Walter Benjamin, dass „das Ewige jedenfalls eher eine Rüsche am Kleid ist, als eine Idee.“ Ein vermeintlich oberflächliches und schnell vergängliches Accessoire wird mit diesen Worten geadelt. Im 19. Jahrhundert – dem Zeitalter der Moderne – findet ein Umdenken und damit ein neues Mode-Handeln statt. Durch technische Erfindungen wie der Nähmaschine, elektrische Webstühle etc. wird zum ersten Mal Kleidung maschinell produzierbar. Neben der Haute Couture à la Worth oder Schiaparelli entsteht die sogenannte Konfektion und mit ihr u.a. soziale, geschlechtliche Distinktionen.
Im Seminar wird es sowohl um die Geschichte der Mode und ihre Spiegelung in künstlerischen Bewegungen (Arts and Craft, russischer Konstruktivismus, Surrealismus, Op Art etc.) über Gemälde, Plakate, Romane, Design, Fotografien oder Filme (alphabetisch ordnen) gehen als auch um theoretische Texte zur Mode (Simmel, Veblen u.a.), damit verknüpften Begriffen wie das Unmoderne und sich ausprägenden Kulturtechniken wie der Schaufenster-Bummel oder das Blättern in Modemagazinen.
