Auf dem Programm stehen relativ anspruchsvolle klassische Texte, die in Einführungsveranstaltungen gewöhnlich nicht behandelt werden, aber grundlegende soziologische Fragen berühren. Ein Schwerpunkt bilden Texte von Karl Mannheim. In der Sache geht es u. a. um folgende Fragen:
• Unter welchen Bedingungen entstehen Revolutionen? (Tocqueville, Marx)
• Wie wirken sich große Kriege auf die gesellschaftliche Struktur aus? (Spencer)
• Wie entsteht ein kollektives Gedächtnis? (Halbwachs)
• Was bedeutet die Existenz unterschiedlicher Wertsphären für die Lebensführung des modernen Menschen? (Weber)
• Wie kann „Generation“ als soziologische Kategorie gefasst werden? (Mannheim)
• Welche Konsequenzen hat die „Seinsverbundenheit des Wissens“ für die Kategorie wissenschaftlicher Wahrheit? (Mannheim)

Das Seminar wendet sich vorwiegend an fortgeschrittene, ambitionierte Studierende v. a. des dritten Studienjahres. Grundkenntnisse in Geschichte der Soziologie werden vorausgesetzt. Einzelleistungen können in Form einer wissenschaftlichen Hausarbeit, evtl. auch als Referat und mündliche Prüfung erbracht werden.
