The ancient Greek historian has, over the last two centuries, been one of the most influential and widely-cited classical authorities, not only in the fields of ancient history and historiography but also in political theory and international relations. This course will consider key episodes from Thucydides’ History of the Peloponnesian War, focusing both on his historiographical and literary methods and his understanding of events, and on the ways that the text has been interpreted by later readers and has influenced contemporary debates on war, democracy, and the place of history in political theory. Knowledge of ancient Greek is not required.
