220014 Entangled Histories in the Americas (S) (WiSe 2012/2013)

Contents, comment

The seminar addresses the historical and current dynamics which constitute the double continent of the Americas as a space of entanglement. Economic interdependencies, migration, transnational social relations, cross-border flows of media and communication as well as political integration processes are the most obvious dimensions of these interconnections between North and South. They point to the importance of critically reflecting and overcoming the traditional cultural, political and scientific imaginaries of space and the necessity of generating new approaches to the field of area studies of the Americas. The seminar deals with the historical conjunctures of these inter-american entanglements from the independence period to the present. We will focus particularly on cross-border dynamics of space, transnational flows, geopolitical imaginaries and the social construction of environment.
IMPORTANT: The seminar must be combined with the course offered by Olaf Kaltmeier under the same title!
