Baltasar Gracián y Morales gehört zu den bedeutendsten Autoren des spanischen Siglo de Oro, auch wenn er gewöhnlich von seiner literarischen Produktion her hinter Namen wie Cervantes, Calderón oder Lope zurückfällt. Die Stärke seines Werkes ist aber die Vielfalt, die weit über das Literarische hinausgeht.
Als 'Graciäns Künste' können im engeren Sinne die zwei Traktate "Agudeza y arte de ingenio" und "Oráculo manual y arte de prudencia" gelten. Der Begriff 'arte' wird hier nämlich mit 'Kunst' übersetzt: Es handelt sich also jeweils um die 'Kunst des Scharfsinns/des Witzes' und die 'Kunst der Klugheit'. Inwieweit und in welcher Form die darin formulierten Kunstgriffe und Handlungsmaximen in Graciáns allegorischem Roman "El Criticón" narrativ umgesetzt werden, ist die Leitfrage des Seminars. Auf der Suche nach Antworten werden wir die genannten Werke in Auszügen lesen und gemeinsam diskutieren.
