Wissenssoziologische Überlegungen finden sich in der Soziologie seit ihren Anfängen (Marx, Durkheim, Mannheim). In einem ersten Teil werden ausgehend hiervon Weiterentwicklungen in der Wissenschaftssoziologie behandelt sowie neuere Formulierungen eines „cultural turn“ in den Sozialwissenschaften. Ein zweiter Schwerpunkt des Seminars liegt in der Erforschung von Wissen als Quelle sozialer Macht und ihren Ausprägungen in epistemischen Gemeinschaften, Wissensökonomien und den Dynamiken sozialer Felder.
