Erwählt, verdammt oder beides zugleich – in Thomas Manns Oeuvre wimmelt es von Figuren, die sich von der gewöhnlichen Masse der Menschheit abheben und mit ihrer Besonderheit hadern. Nicht nur Romane wie ‚Buddenbrooks’, ‚Doktor Faustus’ oder ‚Joseph und seine Brüder’ verfolgen dieses Thema, sondern auch Manns Erzählungen, von denen die früheren (1897-1911) Gegenstand des Seminars sind.
Auf welche Weise hält die ‚real vorfindliche Welt‘ Einzug in die Erzählungen? Wie setzt der Autor gestalterische Mittel (Leitmotivtechnik, Ironie, mythische Wiederholungsstrukturen) in seinen Texten ein. Lassen sich diese ‚Mittel‘ mit den Konventionen des poetischen Realismus vereinbaren oder gibt es gar ein ‚Problem des Realismus‘ bei Thomas Mann?
Darüber hinaus werden die Texte in Verbindung mit zeitgenössischer Philosophie und Psychologie gebracht. Welchen Einfluss haben Schopenhauer, Nietzsche oder Freud auf die Gestaltung von Figuren wie Johannes Friedemann, Detlev Spinell oder Gustav von Aschenbach?
Durch intensive Textarbeit und Lektüre von einschlägiger Sekundärliteratur sollen diese und andere Fragen im Seminar beantwortet werden.
