Das Seminar findet digital, live zur genannten Zeit & z.T. digital, im Selbststudium (online synchron/asynchron) statt.
Education as well as its manifestations in schools/the educational sector are highly nationalized projects. Due to historically grown insitutions, political 'windows of opportunity', and diverging national traditions, schools as well as the educational sector are organized differently all around the world. As said, these differences reflect central ideas and key motifs of the country as well as its (political) history.
However, in the 21st century two trends emerged: Firstly, school systems are modified/reformed based on international organization's recommendations; first and foremost, PISA. This results in a streamlining of educational systems which make - among many others aspects - the educational systems (and its output such as diploma, test results, workforce etc.) more comparable but also causes a loss of national traditions and special paths/Sonderwege. Secondly, the late 20th but primarily the 21st century saw a rise of international comparative scholarship in the field of education; a tradition this course attempts to continue as we will look at and analyze a diverse set of national school systems trying to understand their history, their (generically) grown institutions, and their understanding of education. By doing so, we will accumulate knowledge about the different national education systems but also explore the country's key characteristics. Ultimately, this course aims at enriching the (often nationalized) understanding of schools/education with examples and case studies from all around the world or as Marcel Proust once famously stated with regard to travelling: “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes" - this course is an academic voyage attempting to cultivate a new and fresh at education and its attached institutions.
This course is primarily oragnized through the Lernraum by providing, presentations, podcasts, videos, and the alike. Apart from these asynchronous elements, four zoom meetings will be held in which the found/discovered aspects will be discussed and compared. Therefore, this course is partly asynchronous, partly synchronous.

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
