Unter dem Schlagwort "Critical Demography" werden eine Reihe von Ansätzen geführt, die sich für das Verhältnis von Populationsentwicklung und gesellschaftlichen Machtstrukturen interessieren. Aber auch Demographie als wissenschaftliche Disziplin selbst rückt in den Betrachtungsfokus: Demographie präsentiert nie nur deskriptive Beschreibungen und objektive statistische Zahlen, sie ist eingebunden in Institutionen und politische Interessenlagen, in Machtverhältnisse und Deutungsparadigmen, Stigmatisierungsprozesse und kulturelle Normalitätsvorstellungen. Wie Susan Greenhalgh anmerkte: Das Ziel ist “to tackle the task of critically examining the discourses and practices of the hegemonic disciplines of population”.
