What are international organizations? Why and how do they matter? Where to they originate and why are they created? How are they different from other kinds of organizations? What role do they play in transnational and global governance, but also in national affairs? What is the difference between, for example, the United Nations and Transparency International? Or between FIFA and International Monetary Fund? Why has the legitimacy of the World Health Organization been challenged during the current COVID-19 pandemic?
These and related questions are at the heart of the seminar “International Organizations.” Together, we will further ask: How can we make sense of these questions from a sociological perspective? How can the available literature help us in grappling with this complex and relevant phenomenon? How is, for example, a realist perspective on international organizations different from a constructivist one? What kind of theoretical and methodological tools can we use to study international organizations?
The language of the seminar is English. Course syllabus and readings will be made available via Lernraum before the introductory seminar (October 28, 14h, Zoom).
The Zoom link for the introductory seminar can be found in the course Lernraum.
