Der Kurs zielt auf eine vertiefende Auseinandersetzung mit dem Werk von Georg Simmel. Die ausgewählten Texte geben Einblick in Simmels allgemeine, formale und philosophische Soziologie. Unter Berücksichtigung verschiedener Gegenstandsbereiche (z.B. Religion, Familie, Kultur), Formen der Vergesellschaftung (z.B. Arbeitsteilung, Wettbewerb, Nachahmung) sowie spezifischer Konflikte (Individuum – Gesellschaft, Leben – Form, subjektiver – objektiver Geist) sollen nicht nur die Spannbreite und der fachspezifische Ertrag der Simmelschen Soziologie, sondern auch die Originalität und soziologische Aktualität vieler Gedanken erkennbar werden.
