This course aims to elaborate on how individuals as members of the society in general and parts of the social or political groups in particular, generate the conceptualization of citizenship in terms of the rights they are granted and the responsibilities they undertake. The course will primarily provide students a knowledge of how civic identification is constructed through the political socialization process which will include a critical elaboration of national education along with the disciplines of developmental psychology (with a special focus on moral development), social psychology and sociology. Here, transitions between individual-person-self and the civic agent will be thoroughly discussed through the theoretical framework of psychology. Then, an in-depth look at the dominant discourses of citizenship in different political contexts (democratic and non-democratic settings) will be investigated and a comparative framework will be constructed in relation to the question of how civic education policies could be generated for ensuring the social cohesion in diverse societies.
