Opioide sind ein aktuelles Thema, das mit einer janusköpfigen Dichotomie einhergeht: sie sind als Schmerzmittel in der modernen Medizin unabdinglich, besitzen aber ein hohes Abhängigkeitspotential und sind als Rauschmittel im Kontext illegaler Drogenproblematiken seit jeher negativ konnotiert. Die Gefahr tödlicher Überdosierungen trägt zur hohen Morbidität und Mortalität von Opioiden bei, die seit Jahren zu einem wachsenden gesellschaftlichen Problem in der europäischen und US-amerikanischen Gesellschaft werden. In den USA wird das Problem des Opioid-Missbrauchs sogar als "opioid crisis", "opioid epidemic" und somit als "public health crisis" beurteilt. Der Literat William S. Burroughs hat dieses epidemische Potential von Opioiden bereits 1960 vorweggenommen, wenn er unter dem Titel "Testimony Concerning a Sickness" schreibt: „The junk virus is public health problem nunmber one of the world today.“

In der Literatur lassen sich ab dem frühen 19. Jahrhundert Texte finden, die Opioide literarisch verhandeln: von Thomas De Quinceys Confessions of an English Opium-Eater (1821/22) aus dem frühindustriellen England, über Claude Farrères Fumée d’opium (1904) der Belle Époque, den Zwischenkriegs-Werken Diary of a Drug Fiend (1922) von Aleister Crowley und Opium. Journal d’une désintoxication (1930) von Jean Cocteau, sowie den Werken Junky (1953) und Naked Lunch (1959/ 1962) von William S. Burroughs, bis zu Ann Marlowes How to stop time. Heroin from A to Z der US-amerikanischen Digitalkultur der 1990er. Diese Liste kann man um Texte von u.a. Antonin Artaud, Hans Fallada und Jörg Fauser erweitern, die die vielfältige Thematisierung von Opioiden in der Literatur deutlich machen.

Im Seminar werden ausgewählte Texte bzw. Textauszüge gelesen und dabei das Verhältnis von Literatur und Wissen im Kontext der literarischen Verhandlung von Opioden betrachtet.

Hinweis bzgl. der Lehre im Sommersemester: Die Veranstaltung findet statt (synchrone Lehre über Zoom).
