The parameters of race vary in the political and public discourses of the Americas, where cultural complexity translates the historical entanglements between African, European and Native American heritage. Over the last decade the topic of race in the United States has allowed for centuries-old controversies to reignite. The individual definition of racial constructs gains meaning through human interaction and intercultural contact. Since media emerges as a space of (re)negotiation and expression of racial identity, this seminar will mostly cover African-American music, film, and art. Taking an interdisciplinary perspective, the course aims at highlighting various approaches to racial identity as they emerge in the media of the United States.
