The course provides an introduction into the literature and culture of the Elizabethan age. Taking its title from Neil McGregor's 2012 BBC series (Radio Four) it will explore the changing world of Shakespeare and his contemporaries by turning to a selection of literary and non-literary texts from the period. By investigating those texts and their historical and cultural contexts, the course will address the intersection of religion, class, and gender in both early modern culture and literature as well as explore the emergence of England's (commercial) empire and the dramatisation of race and cultural contact on the London stage.
